Why/How is AIG using the taxpayers' money?

Posted by: Brian Chan | Filed in: finance | Tags: , , | 08:24 pm, March 31st, 2009 No Comments »

I found this lecture video explaining quite well why and how AIG is using the taxpayers’ money for this whole financial mess. Before watching this, you should watch this past post Crisis of Credit Visualized first to understand the bigger picture.

After watching this video, you should know why the taxpayers have been so upset at AIG.

If you want to dig deeper into these financial background details, you can check out these Whiteboard videos yourself.

Saving vs Spending

Posted by: Brian Chan | Filed in: economy, finance | Tags: , , | 11:16 am, March 24th, 2009 No Comments »

piggy-bank-on-money-md1I read this interesting article, suggesting that spending is as important as saving. You have heard of buyer’s remorse, but holding back too much will lead to regrets years later as well. Here is the article:

If You Save Too Much — You Might Regret It Later!
http://consumerist.com/5182167/if-you-save-too-much–you-might-regret-it-later

Well, I will give you one more reason to spend at recession like ours right now. You know one way the US is handling the foreign debt is to simply print more dollar bills? How much are they printing? Hold your breath, and watch this fox news clip.

Of course the US government is doing a lot more other things for the economy, but this bill-printing fact worries many. You may be saving a lot right now by not buying this and that (hopefully not leaving regrets), but in a year or so you may end up having only half of your wealth due to inflation.

Scary stuff. What to do? I think you should buy what is needed such that you can live an enjoyable life. (An enjoyable life doesn’t necessarily mean a luxurious life, as many family bonding moments take place during tough times.) At the same time, save some money for a rainy day. Staying home and getting social security is not a bad idea either.

As always, it’s better to give than to receive. ;)

Pwn2Own 2009: Safari/MacBook falls in seconds

Posted by: Brian Chan | Filed in: technology | Tags: , , , | 12:55 am, March 20th, 2009 No Comments »

In case you missed this, in a security conference called Pwn2Own 2009, Safari/MacBook falls in seconds. Here is the link: http://blogs.zdnet.com/security/?p=2917

According to Miller the winner, “It took a couple of seconds. They clicked on the link and I took control of the machine.” He describes Safari as “easy pickin’s”.

I think at least for a while people should not flippantly say that macs are more secure than windows. But just to be fair, windows’ IE 8 also got broken into a little while afterward by another hacker.

Lesson learned, you have to know how to secure your system whether you are using mac or windows.

Server Lock Example

Posted by: Brian Chan | Filed in: technology | Tags: , | 11:39 pm, March 18th, 2009 6 Comments »

If you want to use custom message on your iphone screen with Server Lock Example, here is how you do it. (My phone is 3G, firmware 2.2.1)

First download a Terminal app, then download vim (or any text editor). Assuming you have Winterboard and have Server Lock Example turned on, we are now ready to go!

Run Terminal, then
cd /Library/Themes/Server Lock Example.theme/

Run “ls -l“, you will see that there is a file called LockBackground.html. However it is owned by “root”, and you are “mobile”. So, let’s su as root then. The password is “alpine”.

Run “vim LockBackground.html“.

Here due to the limited keyboard, the arrows keys are gone along with other important keys such as the ESC key. Luckily I found ways around it. You will see this file:

<html><head>
</head><body style=”
padding: 0;
margin: 0;
“>

<div style=”
height: 480px;
width: 320px;
“><iframe
frameborder=”0″
width=”320″
height=”480″
src=”http://cydia.saurik.com/lock/
></iframe></div>
</body></html>

You can see that the message “This doesn’t really do anything yet, but it /did/ get loaded off the server ;P. (Awesome, huh?)” is from http://cydia.saurik.com/lock/. Well, what do you think? Change that link! ;)

Let’s just say you want to change that link to http://www.myWebsite.com/lock/, because this link will display something cool! (Or you can display some contact info in case you misplace your phone).

To move down, press “return“. When you get to that line, press space to move right. When you are on the letter “c”, press “x” to delete until you have “http://.com/lock”. Now press “i” to go into insert mode. Then type carefully “www.myWebsite”.

After that, you need to quit the insert mode. Poor me I couldn’t find the ESC key. But if you use your finger to press the terminal, a little keybad thing will show up. These are supposed to be command line shortcuts like grep, find, etc. I went to “find” and the find command typed out for me. So now for some reasons you are out of the insert mode, but with a find command. So, just “x” them until you have your “http://www.myWebsite.com/lock/”, see below.

<html><head>
</head><body style=”
padding: 0;
margin: 0;
“>

<div style=”
height: 480px;
width: 320px;
“><iframe
frameborder=”0″
width=”320″
height=”480″
src=”http://www.myWebsite.com/lock/
></iframe></div>
</body></html>

If you make too many typo, then trigger the find command, then type “:q!” to quit vim so that you can start over. Yeah, start over… ^^;

Once you are done, type “:wq” to save.

So there you have it. A custom message from your own server!

boyfriend -> father -> friend !?

Posted by: Brian Chan | Filed in: Uncategorized | Tags: | 01:15 pm, March 16th, 2009 No Comments »

You must be kidding me! I was shocked when I read this article this morning.

Johnston says he and Bristol broke up after ‘fight’
http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2009/03/16/johnston-says-he-and-bristol-broke-up-after-fight/

I thought they were pretty committed??? I once criticized about their coming together. [post]

And now, after a fight, they decided to break up? Quote:

“We were just, we were in a fight,” he said. “And trying to see if we can make things work. But this is what it kind of ended up turning into. But we’ll see what happens.

“It’s just us not, me not being mature enough, or something, and having a kid and thinking … it could be better — better for us to separate for a while,” he added.

I am not sure what the word commitment means to these kids nowadays. Or maybe this is an example of what it means when teens say “I thought about it.”

I think Sarah Palin being part of the Republican will have a hard time commenting on this. But that’s besides the point.

霎時感動 – 穀倉裡的金錶 – 葉青霖

Posted by: Brian Chan | Filed in: life, movies | Tags: | 07:25 pm, March 12th, 2009 No Comments »

Toby Mac – Lose My Soul

Posted by: Brian Chan | Filed in: life, songs | Tags: , , , | 12:41 pm, March 10th, 2009 No Comments »

Help~~~ this song is stuck in my head these days… I hope you like it too! As always, I encourage you to buy the song to support the artist! ;)

Man I wanna tell ya’ll something, Man.
Man I’m not gonna let these material thing’s, get in my way, ya’ll.
I’m trying to get somewhere.
I’m trying to get somewhere,
Thats real and pure and true and eternal.

Father God, I am clay in your hands,
Help me to stay that way through all life’s demands,
‘Cause they chip and they nag and they pull at me,
And every little thing I make up my mind to be,
Like I’m gonna be a daddy whose in the mix,
And I’m gonna be a husband who stays legit,
And I pray that I’m an artist who rises above,
The road that is wide and filled with self love,
Everything that I see draws me,
Though it’s only in You that I can truly see that its a feast for the eyes- a low blow to purpose.
And I’m a little kid at a three ring circus.

I don’t want to gain the whole world, and lose my soul,
Don’t wanna walk away, let me hear the people say.
I don’t want to gain the whole world, and lose my soul,
Don’t wanna walk away, let me hear the people say.

(Mr. Franklin, Step up to the mic sir)

The paparazzi flashes, and that they think that it’s you,
But they don’t know that who you are is not what you do,
True, we get it twisted when we peak at the charts,
Yo before we part from the start,
Where’s your heart?
You a pimp, hustler?
Tell me what’s your title,
America has no more stars, now we call them idols,
You sit idle, While we teach prosperity,
The first thing to prosper should be inside of me.
We’re free…
Not because of 22′s on the range,
But Christ came in range, we said yes now we changed,
Not the same, even though I made a fall,
Since I got that call, no more Saul, now I’m Paul.
(YEP!)

I don’t want to gain the whole world, and lose my soul,
Don’t wanna walk away, let me hear the people say.
I don’t want to gain the whole world, and lose my soul,
Don’t wanna walk away, let me hear the people say.
Don’t wanna walk away,
Don’t wanna walk away

How do I sense the tide that’s rising?
De-sensitizing me from living in light of eternity,
How do I sense the tide that’s rising?
It’s hypnotizing me from living in light of eternity,
How do I sense the tide that’s rising?
De-sensitizing me from living in light of eternity.

(Lord what we gon do,We’re relying on you,
all eyes are on you Lord,
all eyes are on you, all eyes are on you Jesus.)

I don’t want to gain the whole world, and lose my soul,
Don’t wanna walk away, let me hear the people say.
(Don’t let me lose my soul, my soul.)
I don’t want to gain the whole world, and lose my soul,
(This is my honesty, Father, won’t you cover me.)
I don’t want to gain the whole world, and lose my soul,
(Don’t wanna walk away, and all those people say)
I don’t want to gain the whole world, and lose my soul,
(Don’t wanna lose, I don’t wanna lose my soul.)

Lord forgive us when we get consumed by the things of this world,
That fight for our love, and our passion,
As our eyes are open wide and on you.
Grant us the privilege of your world view,
And may your kingdom be, what wakes us up, and lays us down.

(Hallelujah, Don’t wanna lose our soul,
No, Don’t wanna lose my soul.)

Saving Sarah Cain

Posted by: Brian Chan | Filed in: life, movies | Tags: , | 01:47 pm, March 4th, 2009 No Comments »

This movie “Saving Sarah Cain” is good! I don’t want to give the story away. So briefly this story is about this columnist Sarah who became the guardian of a few Amish children. These children moved to Sarah’s apartment. And as you know, that’s completely two different worlds! Things happen and toward the end Sarah realized something… and that’s what the story wants to tell its readers… wowoowowow~~~ Must watch!

This movie is based on the novel “The Redemption of Sarah Cain.”
